The Southern Illinois Salukis took on the Sycamore men's tennis team Wednesday in the final home game of the season at the Duane Klueh Tennis Complex.
Unfortunately, the Salukis (11-6 overall, 2-1 MVC) played spoiler on Michael Wenham's Senior Day as they defeated the Sycamores (3-14 overall 1-2 MVC) with a score of 5-2.
The Sycamores began singles play down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point. Although the Sycamores lost every doubles match, each match was determined by less than two points.
The lone Sycamore senior Wenham, closed out his home career with a loss to junior Anton Leonenko. Wenham took the first set 6-4, but dropped the second and third 1-6, 1-6.
The only two Sycamore points came at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles matches.
Junior Mpiloenhle Migogo won his match at the No. 1 singles by defeating senior Felipe Villasenor after Villasenor retired in the second set due to back problems. Migogo took the first set 6-4, and was up 4-2 in the second set when Villasenor retired.
Junior Blake Douglas grabbed the other Sycamore point in the match. In the No. 6 singles, Douglas defeated freshman Paulo Buryi 6-3, 6-3.
The men's team will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Wichita State to take on the Shockers at 10 a.m.
The women's team will also be in action this weekend as they will be look to rebound after a rare loss to the 71st-ranked Shockers.
However, the women will still be without freshman Aleksandra Dzakula because of an ankle injury. The Sycamores will again have to find a way to win with four players.
On Friday, the Lady Sycamores (4-9 overall, 3-1 MVC) will host the Northern Iowa Panthers (12-5 overall, 1-2 MVC) at 2 p.m. at the Wabash Valley Tennis Complex.
On Saturday, the Drake Bulldogs (9-8 overall, 3-0 MVC) will visit the Duane Klueh Tennis Complex in Terre Haute for an 11 a.m. start to the women's match.
