The best thing to come out of the FOX dramedy "The OC" has by far been the music. Those guys at Warner Brothers gave us five solid soundtrack mixes featuring indie music, and a few covers, since 2004. Now a sixth mix album, "OC Mix 6: Covering Our Tracks," has been unleashed to fill the iPods and CD players of fans nationwide. But it's far from being of the same quality as the last five albums- it's a 12-track cover mix. According to a press release accompanying the album, which was released Dec. 5, each of the five previous mixes had at least one cover song thrown in. Oasis' song "Champagne Supernova," covered by matt pond PA, was by far the best of these covers. But those folks down in Orange County decided to have indie bands cover indie bands. This was a bad idea. There are a few good songs on the mix, but overall the album doesn't stack up against the previous five. British bird Lady Sovereign, who normally has catchy and not-unpleasant vocals, covers the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" with less class than Avril Lavigne covering Bob Dylan. Goldspot's cover of Modest Mouse's "Float On" can float off into eternity unheard, because nobody does Modest Mouse like Modest Mouse and those who do fail miserably. Spoon's song "I Turn My Camera On" is an incredible song, but not when done by Rock Kills Kid. But the CD has redeeming qualities. L.A. band Ashtar Command's cover of Mazzy Star's "Into Dust" makes the album. The nine-minute song is chill and beautiful. Mates of State was given the honor of covering the series' theme, "California." The song, performed typically by Phantom Planet, was the band's breakout hit and stands as a solid song, even through Mates of States' near-slaughtering of it. It's just a good song and it's hard to mess up a good song. Another of the mix's strong songs is a Clinic cover by The M's. "Come Into Our Room" is a synthesized dream on a plastic shiny disc.
