As far as the Sycamore volleyball team is concerned, "business as usual" has a new meaning.

Gone are the days of hoping for wins and rolling with the punches. This team expects to win and it expects to win right now.

"We're keeping everything positive this year," head coach Traci Dahl said. "It seems like in the past, losing was just something that happened and nobody even batted an eyelash at it, but not anymore."

The Sycamores snapped a six-match losing streak Tuesday night when they got their first three-set victory of the season against Chicago State University, and are looking to carry that momentum into this weekend's conference games against Bradley and University of Northern Iowa.

"Fact of the matter is we're 0-2 in conference, and we have to do our job this weekend," Dahl said. "We match up very well with these teams. We just have to come out and make sure we set the pace for the match.

"Good passing is going to be crucial if we are going to be successful this weekend. We can't let them dictate the way the match is played."

Two freshmen, Stacy Qualizza and Shelbi Fouty, have come up big for the Sycamores in recent matches.

"Stacey has been flying off the charts lately," Dahl said. "She's a natural athlete and we couldn't be happier with the way she's been performing for us, especially with the injuries we've had."
Dahl added, "Shelbi has been really good coming off the bench for us, and it's nice to know that we can rely on her to give us some good minutes when we need her to come in."

On the topic of senior leadership Dahl said, "All three of our seniors stepped up big for us Tuesday night and that's something we really needed out of them. All three of them are great leaders and have played big parts in changing the attitude and culture of this team."

The Sycamores have their first home game since Sept. 2 when they beat Eastern Illinois University in four sets.

"We're really looking forward to finally have another home match," Dahl said. "We've been playing in some pretty hostile environments lately and we're hoping that we can get a lot of people in the arena this weekend and make it difficult for the opposing teams."

The Sycamores will be in action at 7 p.m. each of the next two nights as they take on conference opponents Bradley and Northern Iowa. Admission is free with a student ID.
