Tennis teams show improvement in tournaments

The Sycamore men and women's tennis teams were in action this weekend as they competed in the Ball State Invitational Hoosier Classic.

Sycamore junior Sofya Lifanova picked up a couple of wins as she defeated freshman Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State 6-3, 6-1 on Friday. Lifanova also defeated Elizabeth Hall of Mississippi State 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday.

Sophomore Sara Meghoufel competed in one of the most competitive matches of the tournament on Friday as she faced Ohio State's junior Christina Keesey. Meghoufel won the first set 7-6 (4) but was unable to get the win as Keesey came back to win 6-3, 1-0 (4).

Sycamore sophomore Valeriia Petrovych also played well but lost a highly competitive match to Ohio State's senior Julie Voss 6-3, 6-2.

Meghoufel and Lifanova also teamed up in the doubles matches but were defeated by Vanderbilt's freshman Erica Robertson and freshman Jackie Wu in a tiebreaker 9-8 (10-8). The duo was also edged out by another Vanderbilt pair of freshman Chelsea Preeg and freshman Heather Steinbrauer, 8-5.

The Sycamore men's tennis team was also in action this weekend at the Ball State Invitational.

Freshman Lorenz Llg picked up a couple of wins for the Sycamores as he advanced to the consolation championship. Llg defeated freshman Drake Kakar of Marquette 6-3, 6-4 and then went on to defeat freshman Dave Thomas of Ball State 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the championship.

Junior Jon Sigurdsson and Llg also advanced to the championship round of the consolation bracket in the B flight of the doubles matches.

The women's team will next be in action on Friday Oct. 10 at Des Moines, for the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.

The men's team will also be in action next weekend as it travels to Louisville for the Louisville Invitational.
