At 4:19 p.m. Thursday afternoon, ISU's women's basketball team was having a normal practice in the South Gym in the Arena, working on individual drills like ball handling. A minute later, the fire alarm started blaring.
"We thought it was just a drill," said sophomore guard and psychology major Kelsey Luna. "But then, someone came running into the gym and yelled at us to get out because there was smoke."
Smoke filled the Arena as students filed out, but Jeff Fisher, Public Information Officer for the Terre Haute Fire Department, said there were no injuries and minor, if any, damages.
"I wasn't told of any damages," Fisher said, "if there was any damage at all."
Fire authorities determined the origin of the smoke came from the newly-renovated sauna and that someone had possibly set something on one of the heating/humidifying devices, causing it to smoke and set off the fire alarms.
Phone calls to Recreational Sports were not returned as of press time Thursday.
