As the grand opening of the 216,000 square-foot home of the Transit Utility kicked off on May 27, some questions remained regarding spaces available for ISU students and faculty inside the new parking garage.

For several months, Indiana State students were subjected to closed down roads and a maze of detours to get in and out of campus due to heavy construction of the parking garage for downtown Terre Haute on the corner of Eighth and Cherry Streets.

The construction may finally be over, but as many students and faculty hoped it might solve some parking issues, the garage may have made things more complicated.

The construction of the garage, which cost $14 million according to Cliff Lambert, executive director of the city's Department of Redevelopment, replaced a large ISU faculty parking lot. In turn, lots elsewhere on campus that wereopen to all parking tags began to fill more frequently and parking spaces became sparse. While plenty of other parking lots on campus remained with open spaces, the lots closer to campus filled up quickly.

Out of the 626 spaces in the garage, 313 will be allotted to ISU faculty and students. The fees for the garage are as follows: $1 per hour with a maximum of a $6 fee in one day, $45 monthly parking for non-ISU drivers and $30 a month for ISU faculty and students.

It will cost a student or faculty member $150 for the entire fall semester in the new garage, while the school-issued passes for standard campus lots will cost $80 and $100, respectively. However, if one is inclined to purchase a tag for the garage, it would be wise to get it on the first of the month … the garage will not pro-rate any tags.

Aside from being just a parking garage, the new facility will also be a transfer station for the city buses. The air-conditioned and heated waiting area will have seating room, vending machines, public restrooms and wireless Internet, as well as benches in the concourse.

For any questions or concerns, including bus routes and pricing, visit the Terre Haute Department of Transportation's Web site at http://www.terrehaute.in.gov/Dept_Transit/transit_info.htm or call them at (812) 235-0109.
