Two new academic programs and one existing program are starting a chain reaction that will affect different organizations' operations.

When students who regularly use the Career Center return from spring break, they will notice it will no longer be on the second floor of the Student Services Building.

Special assistant to the provost, Mark Green, said there are new academic programs that will occupy parts of the Student Services Building.

"The programs are part of the College of Nursing and Health and Human Services program," he said. "It will take the space in the Student Services Building that is now occupied by the Career Center."

Green said the programs will be on the second floor but it has not been confirmed whether part of the third floor will be used as well.

With the new programs coming into the second floor of the Student Services Building, the center will enter the seventh floor of HMSU, which is currently the home of the Indiana Statesman.

The Statesman will be located on the fourth floor of HMSU for four months, until the eventual new location of the Statesman, former Le Club location in HMSU, is done being remodeled.

The Statesman will be completely moved into its future location by mid-June to early-July.

Kent Waggoner, Career Development Director, said the center is moving to make room for two new programs and one existing program.

"I have no idea how the decision was made as to where [we will move]," he said. "I know a number of locations were considered and the latest was to the seventh floor [of HMSU]."

"From our point-of-view, the seventh floor is a lot smaller than where we are now, but in some ways, we have more space than we need," he said. "Some offices are bigger than we need."

Waggoner also said one reason the center's current location is too large is because the building was originally built for a three story hospital.

"All of the rooms are actually the size of old hospital rooms," he said. "The doors were built large and the hallways are large so gurneys could fit through. It was not built for what we are using."

Waggoner said that since they have been there, it has been a great space and they have plenty of room.

"We are moving from a place that's bigger than we need to a place that's probably smaller than we need," he said. "We have looked at it and we're pretty sure we can make it work and do the things we need for students and for our jobs."

Waggoner said in order to make the floor work for them they may need to make some changes to it.

The seventh floor is currently being used by the Indiana Statesman, which will eventually find a home at Le Club.

"The Statesman will fit well in Le Club for visibility and student friendliness," said Merv Hendricks, Director of Student Publications Merv Hendricks. "It is a good opportunity for us to have space that's more open and more collaboration."

Hendricks said that once in the Le Club space, the Statesman will be more visible to the student body and that it will be easier for students to stop in and talk to editors about news items, employment or classified ads.
