My first year of college was probably the most boring year anyone could experience. I went to a private Bible college for my first year. I transferred to a community college, where I would see a different environment, and would also have my first roommate ever.

Right away, I learned what the term “roommate from Hell” really means.

My first roommate experience started out pretty nicely and we got along really well. Then I let him use my laptop to check his emails, or so he said.

Shortly after that, my computer started freezing and crashing constantly. I didn’t know what was wrong so I took it to a friend, who scanned it and found the problem.

So what was the problem? My roommate at the time had been looking at some, well, let’s just call it some really messed up porn on my computer. I’ll leave that up to your imagination. He loaded it with so many viruses, I had to replace it.

He denied it through and through, but it didn’t stop there.

Throughout the school year, I had begun drinking a lot, to the point where it was a big problem for me and those who actually cared about me.

I got to the point where I didn’t want to drink anymore and my roommate kept going out and coming back drunk and high at late times like 4 or 5 a.m.

For someone who struggled heavily with drinking and substance abuse and was trying to quit, the last thing I needed at that time was my roommate coming back high and drunk, waking me up and asking if I wanted some.

One night, he came in with 10 people and I just stayed in bed like I was sleeping. They started drinking— not a big deal to me—but I didn’t want to be around it. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and an R.A. was there with the dorm supervisor.

Although I didn’t do anything, I got an alcohol fine along with all of them, for just lying in bed and not taking part in the drink-fest that had ensued in my room. Did I mention he used to watch me sleep?

I had to kick my roommate out of the room; I had no other options.

It wasn’t hard because we weren’t even talking anymore, so one of my friends moved in that day.

Shortly after moving in he told me he was dropping out to move in with his boyfriend. He didn’t check-out with the dorm staff, which left my girlfriend and me with the room, which was a huge relief after having a roommate that was creepier than anybody I have met in my life.

This taught me some lessons. One is that it helps to have a girlfriend who will let you stay at her place when your roommate is a douchebag.

Another is that some roommates are impossible to get along with. You can try, you can let everything go, but some roommates just don’t work out.

The final thing I learned is that it’s not always your fault if things don’t work out with a roommate. Sometimes it’s just a bad match.
