How cliché was it of our parents to constantly utter the phrase “be safe” whenever we left the house?

In our minds, it almost seemed as if they knew we were going out to be everything except safe whenever we left the house, even if we were going down the street to the grocery store.

They made these assumptions not because they thought we were incapable of taking care of ourselves, but because they understood just how quickly things can turn for the worst.

A variety of their own experiences may have taken them to this point, but for the most part our parents just cared about our well-being.

Fast forward a few years and we find ourselves looking back on such advice, reminiscent of old days.

When people say “be safe” now, we listen because in our all-knowing minds we think to ourselves, “with the addition of alcohol, being safe is a tough job.”

Spring break starts in a few days, and for those fortunate enough to travel somewhere, being safe should be a priority, among all the superficial priorities that seem to matter so much.

A day spent on the beach will be a fantastic time, especially without the back-and-forth weather of Indiana, but make the most of it, without looking like a total loser.

Sure, it’s great to enjoy a few drinks, but going completely overboard is completely ignorant.

Too many of our peers descend on spring break locations with the intention of being totally inebriated.

Their intentions aren’t focused on having fun or enjoying the sun, it’s more about how many shots or beers one can take.

So instead of hoping or wishing for the best after a night out at the bar, you can do yourself and those around you a favor by at least, trying to do things in moderation.

Spring break is a great time to re-group and relax, but also a great time for those of us who need to step up in the classroom to put our best foot forward for the rest of the school year.

Have a great spring break and be safe.
