Navigating campus is difficult by both foot and vehicle, but one thing that is currently adding even more hassle is the unusual amount of construction on campus.
The south side of campus is particularly problematic, as both Fifth and Seventh streets are closed near Cherry Street due to construction. This eliminates half of the north-bound entrances to campus.
On campus, construction to the front of Holmstedt Hall and construction near Tirey and Parsons halls makes getting around these buildings and into nearby ones a pain.
We at the Indiana Statesman understand how important these renovations are; we simply beg the question, wouldn't it make more sense to do these projects when the campus isn't hopping with students, faculty and staff?
We also question why all these large construction projects were approved to be undertaken at the same time.
During the summer, when the campus was as desolate as the Sahara, only Fifth Street and Sandison Hall were undergoing renovations.
However, as soon as campus began to welcome back students for the fall 2010 semester, more fences, orange signs and backhoes began cropping up in many new locations.
Add to that the closure of part of lot 24 for the new cooling plant and the unusually large enrollment for this semester, and ISU has quite the mess on its hands—a mess that, frankly, could have been avoided.
