When Senior guard Harry Marshall got the ball with 4.4 seconds left in overtime in one of the most important game ISU has played since 2001, he knew the importance of the action he was taking. Marshall dribbled down the court, and with the follow through of his wrists, cemented his legacy as a Sycamore.

Marshall hit the game-winning 3-point basket against Missouri State to avoid the Play-in game for the first time in nine years.

“It was number one for many reasons,” Marshall said. “It was senior day, overtime and winning the game puts the team in position in a place we haven’t been in for years.”

Marshall has been a clutch athlete for the Sycamores since hitting a layup to send a game to overtime at home against the Salukis of Southern Illinois his sophomore year. Marshall also has played with two notable players in Sycamore history, guard Gabe Moore and forward Jay Tunnell.

“I have played with a lot of hardworking players like Gabe and Jay,” Marshall said. “You just try and take a little bit and learn from it as you grow.”

Marshall was chosen for first team All-Defensive and second team All-Valley. Marshall missed four games due to a stress fracture in his foot, but he still led the Valley in scoring and held two of the MVC’s most explosive scorers in check in three meetings against Wichita State guard Torre Murray and Illinois State guard Osiris Eldridge. The twp have combined for 18 percent shooting against Marshall.

“I take more pride in the Defensive team because that’s the coaches saying that you are one of the best,” Marshall said.

Marshall may have deserved first team All-MVC. Maybe for the shot last year he made to beat Illinois State on the road that was named in the top ten buzzer beaters on the year by ESPN. He regularly shuts down some of the top scorers in the MVC, and he scores 29 points on the second best team in the MVC.

I think the fact is that Harry continues to use everything and anything for motivation.

“I would love to be remembered as the guy who took ISU out of the play-in game and with the help of my teammates, gets wins on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” he said.
The MVC should be worried.
