ST. CHARLES—After finishing the regular season with a 16-13 record, the Sycamore women's basketball team (16-13, 7-9 MVC) is set to take on the Salukis of Southern Illinois (5-23, 4-14 MVC) Thursday in the play-in round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
The Sycamores earned the No. 8 spot for the tournament while the Salukis were one spot behind in ninth.
The Sycamores finished out the season with back-to-back losses to on the road to Drake and Creighton. Before the road trip, the Sycamores were on a five-game winning streak, the second longest in the MVC only to league-leading Illinois State.
In both games against the Salukis this season the Sycamores came out victorious, most recently on February 18 in Carbondale, Ill.
During that game senior guard Kelsey Luna scored 17 points over the course of the final five minutes of the game to seal the Sycamore the win.
This past week Luna was also named MVC Academic Player of the Year. Junior forward Kelsie Cooley also received Second Team All-Academic Honors.
Cooley was also named one of 10 recipients of the MVC "Good Neighbor Award" recognizing model student-athletes.
The Redbirds of Illinois State (23-6, 16-2 MVC) are the overall No. 1 seed for the tournament and will face the winner of the game between the Sycamores and Salukis, which is scheduled for 12 p.m. Friday.
Tipoff between the Sycamores and Salukis is set for 5 p.m. CDT at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO.
