The track and field teams competed this past weekend both at Notre Dame in the Meyo Invitational and at DePauw in the Tiger Invitational.
Up in South Bend, the Sycamores took many of the track athletes in an attempt to take advantage of the 320-meter track.
Highlights of the invitational are sophomore Jeremiah Vaughan in the mile. Vaughan ran the third fastest time in school history with his time of 4:06.81. He sits behind Sean Bowman’s 4:06.33 and Jordan Fife’s 4:06.36.
“It is great knowing that I’m up here with the best in school history,” Vaughan said “It gives me confidence to know that what they accomplished I can also accomplish. Next weekend at Iowa state I want to try and break the school record in the 3k,” Vaughan said.
Junior Michael Disher ran the sixth fastest time in school history in the 5,000 meters with his of time of 14 minutes 46.27 seconds.
On the women’s side, senior Erica Moore ran just off her best time in the 800 meters to finish third in that event.
At the Tiger Invitational most of the field event athletes had a chance to compete in great venues.
Senior Kylie Hutson leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the women’s pole vault. Hutson had a season-best vault of 14 feet 1 1/4 inches, a mark that set the Tiger Invitational and DePauw track record. The vault also moved her to fourth in the nation. Freshman Richelle Kimble moved into eighth place on the ISU all-time list with a vault of 11-5 3/4 to finish second, and Amanda Paden was third with 10-11 3/4.
Senior Annie Smith won the long jump with a mark of 16-5 1/4 and Sarah Snapp won the triple jump with a jump of 34-8 1/4. Kelsey Hanley won the weight throw with a toss of 63 1/4 with Felisha Johnson second at 62-8 3/4. Johnson won the shot put with a mark of 46-9 with Tara Perigo third at 42-6.
On the men’s side, Josh Williams won the weight throw with the sixth best throw in school history of 62-11, Brandon Pounds was second at 57-6 1/2, Lyle Nolcox third at 54-11 1/4, and Julius Smith fourth at 54-6.
Pounds also provisionally qualified for the NCAA National Indoor Championships in the shot put with a winning throw of 59-2 1/4,a personal best.
Junior Steven Swinford led another Sycamore 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault with a winning vault of 15-9.
The Sycamores will regroup their teams and travel to compete in the Iowa State Invitational at 1:30 p.m.
